Portrait of a Burgundian Winemaking
Family
Claude and Colette Chevalier, son and daughter of George and Fernande have
graciously accepted the gift their parents gave them of over 11 hectars (27.5 acres) of
Cote de Beaune vineyards. Why not? Because often this transition takes place with a
thunderbolt of wrath between father and son which can cost both millions of francs if
handled poorly - not to mention the heartaches and hassles (Domaine Jayer-Gilles, Magny
les Villers). Otherwise the rights of succession are too costly for young wine families to
assume if a beloved parent passes away (Ponelle family - Clos de la Pousse dOr).
Frequently sibling rivalry puts a stick in the spokes of family tradition leading the
business harmony to a stop (Lalou-Bize Leroy -formerly DRC, now Domaine Leroy). Not
in this case. George and Fernand decided to retire early. Retirement may mean hauling a
winnebago of fishing rods and shuffleboard sticks to West Palm Beach to some. However
George is often caught crossing the street separating his home from the winery to poke his
nose and palate in on tastings, and Fernande spends at least one Sunday a year - glass of
Cremant in hand - directing 2,500 walkers in from an annual wine & gastronomic
"race". With a gleam in his eye Claude juggles between five daughters, a wife
who looks like she could be one of them, and tractors in the vineyards. Colette at about 5
foot even, with no less vigor and as much glint leads tasters through their 18th century
cellars which have been in the family for four generations. With a gleam in his eye,
Claude juggles between raising his five daughters, vinification, tractors in the
vineyards, and living life to its fullest.
